We know we ought to read and discuss great books with our kid, but what if we don’t know which questions to ask? It turns out there are a handful of tips and practices that make meaningful, engaging discussions possible for every homeschool parent regardless of the kind of education she herself received. Discover the questions any homeschooling parent can ask to have deep, meaningful conversations with her kids about the books they are reading together or alone.

Week 2: Practical Strategies for Reading Aloud Every Day

July 2, 8 PM EDT

You’ve heard it said that you should read to your kids every day, as long as they are in your home. That sounds quaint and lovely, but there are stacks of dishes, piles of laundry, and endless rounds of soccer practice and doctors’ appointments to get to! How does a busy, overwhelmed homeschool parent make time to read aloud every day, and why should she even try? This workshop will light a fire under you to make reading aloud a priority, and give you a set of practical tips for fitting in read-aloud, regardless of the time or season of life you’re in. By the end of the session, you’ll have encountered a variety of creative ways to make reading aloud a part of your family life.

You walk into a library or bookstore and are instantly bombarded with a variety of books- some look promising, others look like junk (and indeed, they very well may be). In this workshop, you’ll receive a recommended list of books and booklists to help streamline your efforts, and discover a set of questions you can ask about any book to quickly see if it might be worth your time. You don’t have to reinvent the wheel- a lot of the legwork has been done for you. Learn how to choose excellent books for your homeschool and troubleshoot common struggles parents face when building up a family culture around books.
